GCED Youth Network

The Global Citizenship Education Youth Network is an international youth led structure that unites youth from across the globe to work together in the advancement of GCED. We aim to train, support and connect young people around the world working on different areas of GCED to improve their communities and build a more sustainable, tolerant and peaceful world for all.

History

The GCED Youth Network was formed in October 2016 with the support of APCEIU.

In 2012, the former United Nations Secretary General Ban-Ki Moon launched the Global Education First Initiative (GEFI) and within this initiative there was a Youth Advocacy Group (YAG) that consisted of 15 young representatives from around the world. During 4 years, the members of YAG worked on promoting better quality education, accessible education and GCED.
In 2015, APCEIU and the YAG conducted a Youth Advocacy Workshop on GCED, which marked as an important precedent for the creation of the GCED Youth Network a year later. In 2016 APCEIU organized a second Youth Advocacy Workshop that gathered youth that previously participated in advocacy training conducted by the YAG. As the YAG came to an end with the conclusion of the GEFI, APCEIU and former members of YAG decided to create a youth structure that would focus only on GCED, which gave life to the GCED Youth Network.
Since 2016, the GCED Youth Network has been working closely with APCEIU and other local, regional and international organizations to promote GCED and active youth participation through a series of online and offline activities around the world.
During its first year of operations, the GCED Youth Network constituted its Core Team. The Network started gaining recognition through its international participation. It also conducted local and international events through its members. In 2016, the Network held a session in UNESCO GCED Week in Canada, and also organized and facilitated GCED Workshop in Peru and Georgia.
The GCED Youth Network established its structure and started building a stable set of yearly activities with youth. The first court of online course, Voices of Youth, facilitated and mentored by the Network that has begun. The Network also worked together with APCEIU in developing GCED Youth Advocacy Toolkit, a guideline on advocacy for GCED.
The GCED Youth Network gained more visibility and support of regional and international education stakeholders, aiming to have a more regional presence moving forward. Alongside facilitating the 5th Youth Leadership Workshop on GCED, the Network participated in youth session in GCED at the International Conference held by APCEIU, represented youth in the UNESCO-APCEIU GCED Actors Platform, and co-organize/facilitated GCED Workshop in Moldova.
The GCED Youth Network kept working and started to have a more active role in Latin America and the Caribbean through its regional members, especially by participating in the process of creation of GCED policy for Central America and Dominican Republic with SICA and UNESCO Santiago. In 2020, the Network also participated in developing a resource manual for youth activities on GCED with a group of experts.
The Network continues to expand its partnership with APCEIU in various areas, including Youth Leadership Workshop, resource development, management of GCED Online Campus, and Youth Ambassadors Programme. Besides the cooperation with APCEIU, the Network will actively engage in activities by region and within the community.

"Ubuntu" I am because we are

I believe in the value and sanctity of all human life, and that every human deserves respect at the barest minimum. This philosophy has guided my interaction and given purpose to my life; developing competence in intercultural communications, peace-building and community development. As an undergraduate I started as a volunteer for local NGOs, grew in this area and began working as the founder of a volunteer initiative promoting literacy for children in underserved public schools. Simultaneously, I worked full-time as a Project Manager for a Foundation using arts to drive education and community development. After a eureka moment in 2018, I realized the power of stories and pivoted to video production and documentary storytelling, which led me on a journey of learning, and growth. On this journey I have documented ‘socially responsible’ stories through ‘The Identity Project’; a social enterprise I currently lead. Our aim is to build bridges and points of human connection between people of diverse backgrounds through stories, shared humanity, empathy and understanding.
